Push The Plough - Lawrence Reed

AS WE STRUGGLE TO FEED OUR GROWING POPULATION, WORLDWIDE FARMING PRACTICES HAVE BECOME MORE AGGRESSIVE. MONOCULTURES, ANIMAL BREEDING, HERBICIDES, INSECTICIDES: ALL TAKING A LASTING TOLL ON THE GROUND AND THE ECOLOGY.

Push the Plough

 Push the plough.

Aim the beam and plough the furrow.

Soft grain, heavy rain.

Grind the seed until tomorrow.

All pain for sons of Cain.

           Push the earth.

           Plough the earth.

           Rape the earth.

Mutilate the natural order.

Strange beasts strange fodder.

Mutant mammals, fitter, harder.

Meat feasts, sick larder.

Grey-green leaves unfurling.

Spring’s bright signal signed.

All the heavens circling,

To the earth they tie and bind.

Turn to light.

Sacred solar union.

Heliotrope rite.

Curious spring communion.

 Push the plough.

Harvest all of autumn’s bounty.

Fill the barns, hoard the crops.

Dry and cure and pickle plenty.

Winter yawns never stops.

           Push the earth.

           Plough the earth.

           Rape the earth.

Push our planet to the limit.

Alien wind, chemical rain.

We have all just gone insane.

Solar flares come again.

Distant leafless branches

fuse to grey-brown haze.

Rotting leaves discarded

regenerate and so amaze

Genetic crops.

Fruits enlarging.

Acid drops.

Phosphates charging.

           Push the earth.

           Plough the earth.

           Rape the earth.
